One of the best (if not THE best) features of the new Apple TV actually involves the iPad (or iPhone and iPod Touch). Apple TV can utilize the iPad as a remote. Using the Remote app on the iPad I can pull content (movies, music, podcasts, etc.) from my iMac in my living room and stream it via WiFi to the new Apple TV and display it on my TV. Very cool!

Useless. What's on your computer. Who cares. What you can do once you get it connected. The mystery remains how to get it connected as apple makes that a cluster of circular reasoning.

In fact the Remote software app actually says "To CONTROL Apple TV Turn on Home Sharing on the main menu of Apple TV." Well my guess is that you already did that with your remote. If you are like me and lost your remote, you cannot do that, which means you cannot control the Apple TV from your Remote software. It's a catch-22.

Dod Dad says:

I do appreciate that you are trying to help me. But I don't get what I see in your video. When I start it up I get two different options than you do: 1. Turn on Home Sharing, and 2) Add an iTunes Library. Neither of these options let me control the Apple TV menu. From this menu I can use the iPad to play my music, but I CANNOT access the Apple TV menu system. If this software was really a "Remote" it would let me access the Apple TV menu system, but it does not and your video doesn't show how.

elegantmachines says:

Pause my video at 1:12 and you can see "Use gestures to control Apple TV". You can use gestures to get to the "Settings" on the Apple TV and configure it by swiping the screen and tapping (to select) of your iPhone or iPad. As far as I know you configure all settings this way.

Dod Dad says:

As my comment indicated, I did try the Remote app software. This software lets you play media, but it doesn't let you CONFIGURE the Apple TV using the Apple TV menu. I did some research and it is possible to make ANOTHER remote work with the Apple TV, but only if you have the ORIGINAL remote and program the Apple TV to accept the new remote. It's a catch-22. You can't reprogram the Apple TV to use a different remote without the remote!

elegantmachines says:

Did you download the Remote app from the app store? It's available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It has a nice interface where you can use gestures to swipe or pull up a keyboard when you need to type. It does allow you to remotely control your Apple TV. I tried it a few nights ago when I didn't have the Apple TV remote and it worked great.

Dod Dad says:

I misplaced my Apple TV physical remote. I thought this software could replace it. However this software cannot perform any of the features of the Apple hardware remote. This software isn't actually a remote at all, it's just a media player.

elegantmachines says:

Now you can (I now have an iPad 2) with the newer version of iOS.

Why I can't even get to load my Device list on iTunes if I do have "My Home Sharing" on and they're connected to the same Wi-Fi network???

elegantmachines says:

I don't believe so. I tried playing video from an app (the This Week in Tech app) last night, closed the cover I have for it (which shuts the screen off) and the video stopped. I haven't tried it with the Apple Video app though.

87detto says:

Hey elegantmachines, can you "close" the iPad (shut off the display with the on/off button) and videos will still play, or do I always have to have my iPad lit up?

elegantmachines says:

Great story and so true. Nice to be living in the future eh? 🙂

nickpequignot says:

And it will possibly at some point have a computer tower hooked up to it

nickpequignot says:

If I get it it's just gonna go in my room and hang on the wall.

elegantmachines says:

It's okay, nothing special. It was given to me by my apartment complex as a move in incentive. Looking to get something bigger in the new year.
